OVERVIEW

The Wired Internet Access Gap

India's wired internet penetration stood at just 15% household penetration as of early 2025, with approximately 39-43 million wired broadband subscribers compared to over 900 million wireless users. Low- and middle-income families were locked out of reliable home internet due to the lack of fiber infrastructure, prohibitively high monthly fees, and steep upfront costs that made traditional broadband inaccessible. The unit economics of incumbent providers simply didn't support serving these underserved segments profitably, leaving millions of households without the connectivity essential for education, work, and digital access.

The challenge was to build a viable business model that could deliver high-speed wired internet to price-sensitive customers while maintaining service quality on razor-thin margins.

An Aggregation Platform Built on PM-WANI

WIOM created an aggregation platform leveraging India's PM-WANI framework to bring affordable, high-speed wired internet to previously unconnected households. Beyond building robust technology and devices, the critical innovation was designing an effective and scalable operating model that coordinated all players in the value chain—from infrastructure providers to local entrepreneurs serving as distribution points. By operating on lean margins without sacrificing service quality, WIOM proved that a sustainable business model could exist for serving India's mass market. The result was bringing reliable internet connectivity and opportunity to families who had been systematically excluded from the digital economy.
